U-778 From a letter from Heinz Lewerenz: U-778 also took part in bringing refugees back from the eastern regions, as a photo(1) clearly shows. At the left in the picture is the III.WO Kurt Peschke, then an unknown woman and the I.WO Heinz Neeb, taken on the tower on January 30, 1945. On the same night the Wilhelm Gustloff was sunk by three torpedos from a Russian submarine (5200 dead!). The boat, still ready for front service, brought from Danzig 3 women, 2 children, one administrative officer and 30 radiomen on an icy trip across the Baltic to Kiel. (1)NO photo available.
